Brisbane teenager Nick Foster rewrote the record books of the Genuine Ford Parts Australian Formula Ford Championship yesterday by becoming the youngest driver to score championship points in the 40-year history of the series.
Aged just 16 years and 52 days Foster recorded two championship points by crossing the line in ninth position during race two aboard the #13 Steeline Metal Framing Systems Van Diemen yesterday.
After qualifying in 21st position Foster continually improved throughout the weekend with 15th in race one, ninth in race two and was running as high as sixth during today's final race.
Foster started today's 15-lap journey from the fifth row on the grid and before long had made his way up the order to be running just outside the top five.
Despite losing a couple of positions mid-race when he had trouble selecting a gear exiting turn one Foster regained his composure to claw his way back to sixth place with a handful of laps remaining.
Unfortunately Foster's good run came to an end on lap 11 when he spun the #13 Steeline Metal Framing Systems Van Diemen in the middle section of the circuit. As Foster rejoined the circuit he was collected by Brad Lowe, Adam Graham and Nick Percat. The impact caused significant damage to Foster's car along with Graham's and Percat's, however all drivers emerged uninjured.
As a result of the incident the final race was red-flagged and Paul Laskazeski was awarded the win to become the third race winner of the weekend with Kristian Lindbom and Rob Storey sharing the victories in race one and two.
The declaration of the race also handed Chaz Mostert tenth place and as a result he took over the honour of becoming the youngest driver to score a point in the championship. Mostert turns 16 this week.
Lindbom secured the round overall round win ahead of Storey and Laskazeski.
After two rounds Laskazeski leads the championship standings ahead of Ben Morley and Percat.
The next round will be held at Melbourne's Sandown Raceway on June 7 ˜ 9.
WHAT HE HAD TO SAY……..
Nick Foster ˜ Driver #13 Steeline Metal Framing Systems Van Diemen
‘It is a disappointing end to what was certainly a very encouraging weekend,’ said Foster.
‘With every race I continually improved from 21st to 15th to ninth and was then running sixth in the final race which gives me a lot of confidence.
‘I know now that I have the pace to be amongst the guys inside the top ten on pure speed which is very pleasing.
‘Overall, I have learnt a lot across the weekend and can't wait to get to the next round at Sandown.’
