One of the most talked about teams in preseason testing was the new Jordan 196 with the new Peugeot engine, which looked set to provide Eddie Jordan with a package capable of getting into the "Big 4. The team was in its second year with works Peugeot engines and had also secured a lucrative sponsorship deal with Benson and Hedges, which saw the cars, turn into the instant recognizable gold for the 1996 sea-son. Also, Martin Brundle returned to the Jordan team in 1996 for the first time since he and Eddie Jordan formed a late partnership to take on the mighty Ayrton Senna in the 1983 British Formula Three cham-pionship, which Senna won from Brundle in the final laps of the final race. Both were elevated directly to F1. Eddie Jordan arrived in For-mula One in 1991 and when Ferrari negotiated and signed the 1995 Jordan driver Eddie Irvine for the '96 season, Jordan immediately signed Brundle for an emotional return.

The first race for Jordan GP in Australia saw many problems for Brundle's Peugeot engine and from a grid slot of P19 he had a mighty start, passing Alesi for seventh place in turn 3. Unfortunately though this was upside down at 180 mph in chassis #01 as Brundle had been caught up in an incident when Coulthard and Herbert collected each other. The car rolled into a ball but to everybody's amazement Brundle crawled out of the wreckage and ran back to the pits for the spare car which was # 03, and took the restart.

The early part of the season saw many frustrations for the newly sponsored Benson and Hedges gold cars, but gradually collected some good finishes, emerging with World Championship point's positions; including a strong 6th place in front of their home crowd at the British GP just was few hundred meters from the Jordan factory. The over all result from the season for the team wasn't all disappointing, they finished 5th in the constructors championship a place better than the previous year.

Martin Brundle: ‏This car was strong enough to save my life in a terrifying accident, the very first race for the new higher sided cockpits as luck would have it. Eventually we pushed hard for some solid and satisfying results. It would be my final season as a driver before turning to TV commentary and this distinctive Jordan is an important icon of this great Team now confined to history'
