Eddie Jordan achieved what few others have done in his time in Formula 1. When he joined the formula in 1991 he did so without the support of a major manufacturer and yet he managed to prosper to such a degree that the Jordan outfit is constantly suggested to be the team most likely to break the monopoly of the 'big-four'. Entering F1 with a small team, a customer engine and a neat little chassis. The Jordan 191 performed well from the outset, due in the main to the efforts of team technical director, Gary Anderson, who has continued to produce capable cars every year since.
From 1996 to 2005, Benson and Hedges was the primary sponsor of Jordan. At races where the ban on cigarette advertising was in force, the name was substituted for "Bitten Hisses" in 1997 when Jordan's mascot was the snake Hissing Sid, "Buzzing Hornets" was the mascot an un-named from 1998 to 2000, "Bitten Heroes" during 2001, when the team's mascot was a shark, and from 2002 onwards 'Be On Edge' (BENSON & HEDGES). It was in the sponsor's first year that the team coloured their cars in the gold of their cigarette packet and then switched to yellow after that.
For the 1999 season the driver line-up was previous champion Damon Hill and a former F3000 driver of Jordan's, Heinz-Harald Frentzen, who joined his first F1 program in 1999, replacing Williams-bound Ralf Schumacher. Hill was to retire at the end of the 1999 season, however, Frentzen's season was immensely successful, for a short while Frentzen had entertained thoughts of a world title, but poor luck and greater speed from McLaren and Ferrari ended his hopes. Frentzen finished third in the Drivers' Championship and the team also finished third amongst the Constructors'. 1999 was to be the team's finest season ever.
The Jordan Honda 199 was the car with which the Jordan Formula One team used to compete in that 1999 Formula One season. It was powered for the second year running by a Honda Mugen engine, The Honda powered 199 proved to be Jordan's most successful car in its fifteen-year history, scoring two wins, a pole position and third place in the Constructors' Championship. Mugen Motorsports (M-TEC Co., Ltd) is the Japanese company that was formed in 1973 by Hirotoshi Honda, the son of Honda Motor Company founder Soichiro Honda, and Masao Kimura. Mugen, means "Without Limit". The company tunes and races Honda vehicles in the Super GT championship, and, additionally, sells aftermarket parts to amateur enthusiasts. It was part of partnerships that won the Formula 3000 championship in 1990 and 1991, and that eventually led to Mugen's involvement in Formula 1, from 1992 to 1999, and up to 2005 was the exclusive supplier of Formula Nippon engines. Since team Prost was a user of Mugen Engines who subsequently went on to establish a relationship with Peugeot in 1998, Mugen sleeked a new partner and reached a two-year agreement with Jordan Grand Prix for which Mugen produced the MF201H-C engine. Mugen pulled out of F1 at the end of the 2000 season leaving Honda to supply the engines to the field.

It was the car that started the season off for the new Jordan driver Heinz-Harald Frentzen, at the Australian Grand Prix which was the first Formula One race held on March 7, 1999 at the Melbourne Grand Prix Circuit in Melbourne, Australia. . With a qualification in 5 place, a 4th fastest lap, Frentzen got a podium in a very good 2nd. Things started well for the team and leading into the next race at Brazil which was held on April 11, 1999 at the Autódromo José Carlos Pace in São Paulo, Frentzen qualified 8th, to battle his way up through the field to finish a very pleasing 3rd and gain the 5th overall fastest lap.
