It was a weekend of triumph and sadness for Powerboat P1 star Giampaolo Montavoci as his joy at setting a new world speed record for an Evolution Class boat was followed by the news of his mother's death.

Despite bad weather at Lake Iseo in northern Italy and a major propeller problem, Montavoci clocked 98mph in his Gibellato boat. On board were his Metamarine Corse team mates, Supersport world champion Fabio Magnani and Norwegian Kolbjorn Selmer.

Managing Director of Powerboat P1, Jim O'Toole said: "Although the record speed was lower than Giampaolo had hoped, it is an outstanding achievement and we send him and his team our congratulations. However, the success was totally overshadowed by the loss of his mother. Powerboat P1 is a big family, and all our thoughts are with Giampaolo and his family and friends at this sad time."
