Hull The 6-foot keel gives good stability for offshore passages. The rudder configuration is half skeg and half balanced, which proved to be very successful and a good compromise. Experiments were made, full-size, on many of these boats with full skeg, half skeg and large and small skegs. It was concluded that the half-skeg and half-balanced configuration gave the best and easiest control for steering the boat. In recent years it has been proved still further that the completely balanced rudder is most effective for sailing performance. The relatively low ballast-to-displacement ratio and soft chines create a hull that is easy to sail so that even in 35 knots of wind she can go to weather at 6 knots, with the off-watch sleeping comfortably below. Another factor about the hull is its terrific strength. In the worst sea conditions it is quiet below with very little banging or creaking. Bottom painted - August 2007
Deck The flush deck in the way to the mast partners gives added strength and workability around the base of the mast when hoisting sails, reefing and setting spinnakers. The small, raised cabin trunk forward makes it possible to keep all the hatches up, off the main deck, and gives the added headroom needed forward below deck, making the walking are of the deck very clear and free of toe-stubbers. At the same time, the edges of the small cabin trunk gives extra, secure footing when going forward in heavy sea conditions.
The cockpit arrangement is particularly conducive to ocean cruising. It is deep, with high-backed seats and there is a large dodger that keeps everyone in the cockpit dry. An interesting feature is the forestay from the mizzenmast, which comes down to the middle of the cockpit and provides an excellent place to hold on.
The bimini top has an extension that converts the cockpit into a great place to enjoy during rainy days at anchor. Disembarkation is simplified with a semi-rigid dinghy that securely travels in its davit system with a 15 HP outboard ready for immediate usage. RIB inflatable tender with 15 hp Mariner outboard Stainless steel davits Ideal windlass with deck foot switches 60 lbs CQR anchor with 70' chain 120' rode 30 lbs. Danforth 60 lbs. Danforth Stern swim ladder
Sails and Rigging The rig was considered to be a tall, high-aspect rig for its day, and proved to be successful when racing as well as giving good light air performance when cruising with smaller jibs. The mainsheet is trimmed to a traveller just forward of the companionway dodger, keeping the mainsheet completely clear of the cockpit and other sheet winches. A roller reef was standard in the late 1960s, but was later changed to slab reefing.
The rig is straightforward and very strong with a single spreader. She was designed before all of the finicky gadgets that have been developed in the 1970s and 1980s and she therefore is a lot easier to sail than a more modern vessel, specially in difficult conditions at sea. Mainsail - fully battened, good condition Genoa headsail #2 - good condition Hood mizzen sail - fully battened - New 2008 North spinnaker - New 2008 Profurl roller furling unit for the head sail Barient primary winches Barient secondary winches #35's Spinnaker pole Canvas Dodger and Bimini Dodger for forward hatch
