VICTORIA Police will today pay tribute to officers who have been killed in the line of duty.

As part of National Police Remembrance Day, a march and other events will be held in Melbourne.

This year also marks the 20th anniversary of the Walsh Street killings, which claimed the lives of constables Damian Eyre and Steven Tynan.

Chief Commissioner Christine Nixon said today is a very important occasion as it offers police and the community the opportunity to acknowledge the ultimate sacrifices made by police across Australia and around the world.

"Thankfully we have not lost any police officers in the line of duty over the past year," Ms Nixon said.

"However, together we pay our respect to all 150 Victoria Police men and women who have been killed while on duty since 1853.

"This year also holds particular significance as we are paying tribute to 20 years of the Blue Ribbon Foundation, while remembering the deaths of two young constables, Damian Eyre and Steven Tynan.

"Both of these officers were murdered in an ambush right here in Melbourne."

She said it also highlights the risks police face in serving the community.

"Today we stop to recognise the everyday actions of our police members whilst honouring those who made the supreme sacrifice going about their duties.

"We are eternally grateful for their actions."

Eyre's father, Frank Eyre, will speak at the service to pay tribute to fallen police officers.

The annual event coincides with Victoria Police Blue Ribbon Day, and all Victorians are urged to wear blue and white ribbons as a mark of respect to fallen police officers.

One million blue ribbons have been distributed across Victoria.
