Profile
Moorabbin Airport is the premier General Aviation Airport in Victoria
The airport opened in 1949 and now is home to 55 aviation and related tenant companies. They operate some 300+ aircraft and helicopters and employ more than 800 staff. The airport is a major centre for training aviation professionals in Australia. The airport also provides significant foreign currency earnings through flight training contracts with overseas airlines.
Your convenient local alternative for regional scheduled services and charter operations.
Moorabbin Airport is located approximately 21km South East of the Melbourne C.B.D; at the gateway to the prestigious tourism and leisure destinations of the Mornington Peninsula; in close proximity to the commercial/industrial hub of Dandenong; and within easy reach of potential leisure travellers on charter and regional services.
There is already arterial road access to major road systems serving the South and East of Melbourne as well as direct multi-lane highway access to the C.B.D.
As well as existing road access, reservations for major freeways serving the Mornington Peninsula and southern Victoria pass within 500 metres of the airport.
Given the increasing congestion of road systems in and around Melbourne central, there is a considerable saving in transit time for passengers whose final destination is to the South and East of the C.B.D.
Moorabbin Airport is also a major manufacturing and commercial centre for the South East region of Melbourne, providing a large employment base for the region.
The Airports Act of 1996 authorised the sale of Federal Government-owned airports throughout Australia. In June 1998 Moorabbin Airport Corporation Pty Ltd (MAC) successfully bid for the lease of Moorabbin Airport.
Moorabbin Airport is located approximately 21 kilometres South-East of the Melbourne Central Activities District in Melbourne's 'Bayside Suburbs'. It is bounded by Centre Dandenong Road to the North, Boundary Road to the East, Lower Dandenong Road to the South and Grange Road and Bundora Parade to the West. The Airport comprises 294 hectares of relatively flat, open land used for a variety of aviation and related uses and also a range of non-aviation uses.
Moorabbin Airport has a significant role in the Australian aviation industry, being one of the busiest general aviation airports in Australia. A range of planning criteria have been assessed to determine the objectives for development of the Airport land. The opportunities and strengths of the region have been examined and integrated into the strategic directions of the Airport Master Plan.
The landscape character of the Airport includes expansive open areas, great viewscapes and other landscape features. The landscape vision for Moorabbin Airport seeks to maintain the open feel of the land with three-fifths of the land utilised in aviation related areas.
