The Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) is an independent statutory authority, established on 6 July 1995. CASA is responsible for the safety regulation of civil air operations in Australia and the operation of Australian registered aircraft overseas. CASA's mission is to maintain, enhance and promote the safety of civil aviation in the interests of the Australian public through effective safety regulation, enforcement and education. CASA's structure is aligned to the key segments in the aviation industry, and to underpin the shared responsibility' approach between the regulator and the aviation industry. CASA'S priority is to concentrate on the highest levels of safety for passenger-carrying flights, particularly high-capacity operations. CASA is responsible for pilot and engineer licensing, aviation medicals, registering aircraft, issuing certificates for air operators and maintenance organisations, issuing Aviation Security Identification Cards (ASICs), and safety education and training.
