The 250GT reached a level of true dual-purpose perfection with the Short Wheelbase Berlinetta. One of the most important GT racers of its time, the 1959 250 GT Berlinetta SWB used a short (2400 mm) wheelbase for better handling. The 250 GT combined the three main focuses of Ferrari development of Grand Prix Racing, long distance endurance and prototypes, thus exploiting power and reliability. Of the 176 examples built, both steel and aluminium bodies were Used in various road ("lusso") and racing trims. Unveiled at the Paris Motor Show, it was soon selling and racing as the ultimate Granturismo automobile which packaged both comfort and exclusivity to the demanding clientele and gentleman racer. The 250 GT SWB was a distinctive Ferrari design, captured and refined looking by Pininfarina, visually expressing the marque's famous attributes.

The 250GT SWB Berlinetta was immediately successful in racing, and remained so until it gave way to the new head of the GT group, the illustrious 250 GTO.
